Bushra Schuitemaker is a zoologist, currently doing her PhD on poultry health and welfare at the Quadram Institute Bioscience, affiliated with the University of East Anglia. In addition to her studies, Bushra is also the vice-chair of the British Ecological Society’s Racial Ethnic Equality & Diversity (REED) Ecological Network, a supportive platform for under-represented & marginalised ethnicities. Bushra has always found ways to incorporate her interest in animals into her research. Working in immune-oncology at Wellcome Sanger Institute, Bushra began to question the relevance of laboratory animal models for diseases and instead looked to the wild to alleviate some of the medical mysteries. Since then, she has been attempting to find even more ways to simultaneously help animal and human health with her research.
